Stress and Fatigue Assessment
Prevent fatigue failure in your critical assets with expert stress analysis and engineering assurance
Stress and Fatigue Assessment
Identify fatigue risk before it becomes structural failure
Stress caused by repeated dynamic loading can result in fatigue failure in structures and components. A fatigue assessment helps identify problem areas, understand the likely cause and define practical engineering solutions before failure occurs.
The risk
Repeated loading can lead to fatigue cracks that remain unseen until they cause reliability issues, repeated breakdowns, lost production time or structural failure.
Our approach
AVT Reliability combines strain gauge testing, finite element analysis, vibration correlation and practical engineering review to assess fatigue risk and recommend appropriate action.

Why It Matters
Why is a fatigue and stress assessment important?
Static equipment and structures can develop defects and cracks from constant use, dynamic loads, thermally induced forces and overload conditions.
In many cases, there are no obvious warning signs until the issue results in repeated problems, lost operating time or eventual failure. A structured assessment helps identify risk earlier, so remedial action can be planned before damage escalates.
Common defects
Deteriorating foundations, pipeline cracking and broken bolts are common issues that can often be rectified if identified early enough.
Early assessment
Some weaknesses can be assessed using simple techniques, helping teams make informed decisions before defects become more serious.
Root cause analysis
More complex cases may require in-depth root cause analysis to determine both the source of the problem and the most effective engineering solution.

How AVT Can Help
Predictive fatigue analysis for design validation, investigation and reliability improvement
Predictive fatigue analysis can help reduce premature failure by identifying fatigue risks before they lead to repeated damage, unplanned downtime or structural failure.
Analysis methods can be used during product development to highlight potential problems, validate computer design models in real working environments and investigate suspected issues with equipment already operating in the field.
Fatigue & Stress Assessment Solutions
AVT Reliability’s Asset Integrity Department has extensive experience in the capture, analysis and interpretation of fatigue data across a broad spectrum of applications and industries. Our engineers apply the right diagnostic methods to identify the cause of the problem and recommend an effective course of action.
Solution 01
Strain Assessment
AVT Reliability has extensive experience in experimental stress analysis, based on the professional selection, installation and monitoring of strain gauges by BSSM-certified engineers.
Our on-site and in-house strain gauging service covers most types of strain gauges and is supported by advanced fatigue analysis software.
This enables fatigue life estimates of welded structural steels to BS7608, as well as assessments for other welded and non-welded components.
Solution 02
Finite Element Analysis
Proper use of finite element analysis techniques can build confidence in designs by revealing possible stress concentrations, high-risk areas or structural “hot spots”.
These findings can then be addressed through design modification or validated with physical testing. Correlating practical test data with FEA provides a stronger foundation for optimisation and structural reliability improvement.

Further Engineering Support
Understanding the cause, not just the symptom
Fatigue and stress problems are often linked to wider asset behaviour, operating conditions and structural response. AVT Reliability can support further investigation where the failure mechanism, vibration source or contributing factors need to be understood in greater detail.
Service 03
Root Cause Analysis
When cracks, broken components or repeated defects occur, identifying the true root cause is essential. A repair may address the immediate issue, but without understanding why the failure happened, the same problem can return.
AVT Reliability applies practical investigation methods, measurement data and engineering analysis to determine the contributing factors behind fatigue, stress and vibration-related failures.
Helping customers move from repeated repair to a clear, evidence-led corrective action plan.
Service 04
Structural Vibration Resonance Checks
Structural vibration and resonance can significantly increase fatigue risk, especially when operating forces align with the natural frequencies of a structure, pipework, support frame or machine base.
AVT Reliability can carry out resonance checks and vibration measurements to help determine whether structural response is contributing to cracking, loosening, excessive movement or repeated component failure.
This supports practical recommendations such as design modification, stiffness changes, support improvements or further dynamic analysis.
