A critical issue was identified on a Bio Fermentation Cooling Water Pump at the rear of a BioTrans area.

The Challenge

During a routine visual inspection, AVT Reliability Engineer, Mike Redfern noticed loose nuts and bolts around the skids of the asset and an audible noise emanating from the non-drive end (NDE) of the motor. The potential for failure was high and if not addressed it could have resulted in a site wide loss of steam from the boiler, halting production until the asset was replaced.

The Solution

Mike took immediate action by taking vibration readings using the Machine Sentry Mobile 2 Sensor and analysing the data more closely on the Machine Sentry Software. His thorough inspection revealed signs of rotating looseness in the spectra data. He documented the findings within Machine Sentry and sent the information to the customer, who then coordinated with his team to inspect the asset.

The onsite team secured the nuts and bolts around the skids, stabilising the asset to the floor. Additionally, they carried out an inspection of the motor’s cooling fan to ensure its functionality. This proactive approach prevented further deterioration of the pump and avoided a major failure.

Follow-Up

The quick response and attention to detail prevented a potential breakdown that could have disrupted production. Thanks to Mike’s diligence during the visual inspection and the analysis of the Machine Sentry data, the pump issue was resolved before it escalated into a more significant problem.

The intervention not only improved the asset’s reliability but also ensured continuous production and avoided costly downtime.
